Coryphantha
Coryphantha are small cacti from Mexico and the Southwest of the USA. They are closely-related to the large genus Mammillaria, and some are cold hardy. The name Coryphantha is from the Greek and means "flowering on the top"; the flowers appear in the youngest growth, which is in the center on top of the plant. The flowers are yellow, white or pink. The fruits are green and juicy, with dried flower remnants attached, the seeds are brown, smooth, with reticulate testa.
Echinocereus
Echinocereus is a widespread and large genus of clumping cacti, prized for their flowers. Found almost everywhere that cactus are found, this genus has a good representation of cold hardy species.
Agave is a wonderful genus of succulent plants mainly from the American Southwest and Mexico. They make striking plants in the garden especially when they flower (an effort so supreme that they die afterward). Commonly called "Century Plants" because of the mistaken belief that they grow for 100 years before blooming. In our gardens a bloom is quite rare, but it could happen anytime after 7 years. Fortunately by then, the plant usually produces many pups which can set into the garden to carry on the tradition.
Yucca
The Genus Yucca includes about 4 dozen species of perennials, shrubs, and trees in the Agave family, Agavaceae. These lovely evergreen plants with sword-shaped leaves and annual clusters of white flowers are a dramatic addition to any garden. Yucca are native to the deserts of the Americas and grow as far north as Nevada and Utah.
Escobaria
Escobaria is a genus of small, usually clumping cacti. These cacti are characterized by their stems that can range from spherical to cylindrical and are covered with a dense network of short, pale spines emerging from tubercles. Flowers typically appear near the top of the stems and come in various colors, including pink, magenta, yellow, and green.
Opuntia
Opuntia are the ubiquitous "Prickly Pears" of the western US and Mexico. This very large genus has allies from South America to Canada and some of these are the most cold hardy of all cacti.
Cylindropuntia
Cylindropuntia are columnar growing cacti that also share very impressive cold hardiness!!
Hens and Chicks
Hens and chicks is a common name for succulent plants, primarily those in the genus Sempervivum, known for their unique growth pattern. A larger rosette (the "hen") produces smaller rosettes (the "chicks") around it, resembling a mother hen with her young ones. These plants are also known for their hardiness and ability to thrive in various conditions, including rock gardens and containers
